PSYCHOLOGIST, AEROSPACE MEDICINE- PMPH (NASA), #67346

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) in Galveston, Texas is seeking an operational psychologist for our work with the aerospace industry. This position will support the UTMB subcontract with KBR, the prime contractor for the Human Health and Performance Contract at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas and will include an appointment to the faculty of the UTMB Health School of Medicine.

This position provides a wide range of psychological services for Flight and Medical Operations in support of NASA’s Space Medicine Operations Division. Services are provided to astronauts, astronaut candidates, their families and key mission personnel. Job responsibilities are coordinated with NASA’s Operational Psychologists and include astronaut applicant screening and selection; the full range of International Space Station mission support, including pre-flight training and preparation, in-flight monitoring and support and post-flight reintegration for ISS astronauts and their family members. This position will also provide services to key mission and other ground-based personnel, such as flight surgeons and managers, and facilitate collaborations with internal and external operations and research. Additionally, clinical behavioral health care and consultation will be conducted as part of the services provided by the NASA JSC Clinic.

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD or PsyD in Clinical, Counseling or Applied Psychology (3-5 years of post-degree job experience).

• Licensed or license eligible in psychology in Texas.

• Experience in identifying, addressing and intervening in personal, family, environmental, and organizational issues.

• Experience in at least two of the following areas:

  • The selection, training, and operational support of high-performing personnel.
  • Development and/or implementation of family support programs for deployed personnel.
  • Training curriculum development and/or delivery to high-performing personnel.
  • Design/and/or implementation of personal/team coaching for performance enhancement.

Specific Duties:

• Support development and implementation of the psychological screening tools and activities for astronaut applicants, and on an ongoing basis, assess best practices for improving screening and selection methods.

• Implement behavioral health and performance countermeasures to psychological and environmental factors which challenge the attainment of health, performance, or mission goals.

• Provide pre-flight psychological training and preparation of crewmembers and families; in-flight monitoring and support of crewmembers' behavioral health, well-being and performance; implementation of in-flight monitoring and countermeasures and post-flight repatriation and reintegration.

• Provide behavioral health consultations to flight surgeons, managers and key mission and analogue personnel.

• Provide training to astronauts and ground personnel in the psychological aspects of long-duration spaceflight.

• Contribute to developing operations concepts for NASA's future spaceflight exploration missions.

• Apply operational knowledge and approaches to behavior health countermeasures, tools, techniques, and programs.

• Maintain a learning liaison with other operational psychologists within government and private sectors that support mission analogues to spaceflight.

• Collaborate with and advise internal NASA and external (including ISS international partners) research and operations groups and professionals
