<p><strong>Deborah Ancona</strong>, Seley Distinguished Professor of Management at MIT Sloan, has been researching the answer to this question for the last two decades. Her early research pointed to the external orientation of teams as a differentiator between the best and the rest. Ancona labeled such teams ‘X-teams,’ underscoring the importance of having an X-ternal focus outside their team, both within and beyond their company. The relevance of this ‘X-factor’ has become even more critical in today’s rapidly changing, tech-disrupted, hybrid working, and societally volatile business landscape.
