Mandela’s Way
ORDERRecommended by Vicki Vandavere
I am fortunate to live in a commUNITY (capitalization on purpose) managed by a company that still embraces the values of fairness and inclusion. I was at a meeting of the committee focused on preserving these values discussing a very difficult issue. A colleague reminded me of a book I read years ago. I got it and re-read it and am now actively using it. Mandela’s Way: Lessons for an uncertain age by Richard Stengel with the preface by Nelson Mandela. Although this was initially published in 2010, it is still relevant today. The key lessons are as follows:
- Courage is not the absence of fear.
- Be measured.
- Lead from the front.
- Lead from the back.
- Look the part.
- Have a core principle.
- See the good in others.
- Know your enemy
- Keep your rivals close.
- Know when to say no.
- It’s a long game.
- Love makes the difference.
- Quitting is leading too.
- It’s always both – be comfortable with contradictions.
- Find your own garden – a place of pleasure and retreat. He made this in prison when he could not find it.
